What would you say to the people that just want to bring more consciousness to what/how they eat.

Has sparked my curiosity about the word ‘Sorry’.
In the context of my friend sharing with me that her husband just told her he doesn’t love her anymore.
My first response was ‘I’m sorry that happened’, of my way of comfort.
I’m wondering if using a different word or phase would be more helpful eg ‘Thats a lot’ or ‘that feels or sound intense.’
These words don’t quite fit.
I work mostly with elderly people who generally share their emotional troubles with me.
I consider myself a good listener and I feel that helps.
But I’m feeling using the word ‘sorry’ just doesn’t fit anymore.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
